Our daughter is a sophomore and has been part of the show choir year since she was a freshman. Every year the show choir, along with the chamber and madrigal choirs (of which she is a member of both) travel outside the state for a competition. It's not really a competition between the groups but against themselves. After they perform, three adjudicators assess their performance and spend time working with them on ways to improve. It's quite the learning experience for them. The show choir received the gold, the chamber, the silver.
Last year we went to Chicago and this year we started out in Nashville and then on to Memphis. We did all the touristy things...the Country Music Hall of Fame, Studio "B" where Elvis recorded almost every song he ever sang. Dinner was at the Hard Rock Cafe and that was followed by an excellent performance of The Color Purple".
Then it was on to Memphis for a tour of the Civil Rights Museum, (a powerful, moving, and humbling experience), the Gibson Guitar Factory to see how guitars are made, The Rock and Soul Museum, Beale St. a riverboat dinner cruise, and finally a tour of Graceland, and all of Elvis's cars and gold records.
It was a marathon 4 days but we loved every minute of it!!
