I just returned form a visit to the Big Apple where my daughter was performing in a show choir competition. More on that later.
Before I left I recorded a new voice mail message for my phone and set up my auto responder for my e-mail. NOTE TO SELF: If you set up an auto responder for your e-mail , be sure to change your e-mail notifications in FB or every person who comments on anything will get your auto responder message. It was kind of a mess because I had limited access to the internet, but it's back to normal now. I should note that my auto responder included the name and number of the person handling my business, which happened to be our owner.
When I got back on FB, I gave a short explanation about the auto responder with my apologies and I was surprised at the first 2 comments, which said: "auto responders suck and I never use them", and "my clients love the fact that I answer all my e-mails while on vacation."
I respect everyone's decision as to how they operate their business, but my response was this: 'A vacation spent checking and answering my e-mails every ten minutes is not a vacation for me, nor is it a vacation for my husband or daughter. We often go on vacation with friends who also find it very annoying if I do that and I don't blame them. Being on vacation but acting like you're at work interrupts other people's vacation too.
Life passes quickly and I don't want to look back and wonder how I could have missed so much because it was all about my business. When I reminisce about a vacation with my husband and daughter I want the memories to be about the boat ride we went on, a wonderful beach, great sightseeing, or peace and quiet while reading good book side my side. I am confident that my clients understand and respect completely that I take an occasional vacation and that they want me to enjoy myself just as they do when they go on theirs.
I should also note that one of my clients bought a home while I was gone because he was in the very capable hands of my broker.
EDIT: If something could not be resolved without my input I would certainly do my very best to help.
