Broadview Heights Ohio Announces Summer Festival Has Been Cancelled.

Yesterday  the city of Broadview Heights Ohio announced that the summer festival, which so many people, residents and non-residents alike have enjoyed for years, has been cancelled. They cited worries about the lack of sponsors, and not the same level of spending by the attendees, fearing they would likely be in the red when all was said and done.

I can only remember one other time in the years that we have attended (about 14) that the fest was canceled, though I can't remember the reason.

carnival ridesWhat I do remember is the wonderful time my daughter has always had at this event. For many years we took her all 4 days....yep, really, all four days. We watched her ride the dragon, a very small "coaster" for very small kids. We remember when she was afraid of it and then when she had to ride it 20 times in a row or more. A few years later she was headed for the ride where the cars literally turn the rider upside down. This is one you would never find me or her Dad on but kids are kids and think it's a blast. Now as a teen she still rides the rides but loves just "hangin out" with her friends.

Then there's the wonderful food...not good for you but oh so good when you're eating
it..corn dogs...greasy fries...cotton candy...Italian sausage sandwiches...gyros...scarnivalnow cones... and of course, East Coast Custard.

For many years there have been spectacular fireworks on Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday of the 4 day event. with Saturday being the "best fireworks" night, along with entertainment for every age...polkas and dancing, country and rock music.

My daughter was disappointed when she heard the news, but I think the disappointment will be much greater for the little ones that look forward t
o it every year.

All that being said I told my daughter this. The fest is an "extra" from our city. Sometimes extras have to go away for a while just as in our own households. Sometimes it will be necessary to cut out the extras for a while and I commend our Mayor Sam Alai and the city officials who made this difficult but necessary decision, and one that is clearly in the city's best interest.
