Several years ago when we built our home, we had the landscaper put in a nice area in the back yard for a jungle gym for our daughter. It measures about 10 x 14 and is enclosed with railroad ties and tons of gravel. She outgrew the gym a few years ago so I wanted to do away with the whole area, fill it in and reseed the lawn. Then I got some quotes and found that it was pretty expensive.
I mentioned it to my sister in law and she suggested we put a fire pit in the middle of the area for the chilly evenings that we often have even in the summer. So that's exactly what we did. Then we bought some inexpensive chairs for around the pit, and last summer got to enjoy seeing my daughter and her friends "hangin out" around an open fire on a beautiful summer evenings roasting marshmallows and acting and talking like typical teenagers...music to my ears.
Back yard fire pits can be enjoyed in some but not all communities, but be careful to follow the code and always use caution around an open flame. Always extinguish the fire before you go to bed and never let small children be by the fire unattended.
