I have lived and worked in Broadview Heights, Ohio since 1990 and my parents moved here in 1999. We all love this beautiful city and can truly call it home.
We love it for:
- the small town feel but with city amenities
- the great recreation department which includes soccer fields and baseball diamonds where I have watched my daughter play many games
- the many places of worship
- the excellent school system
- the neighbors that have become friends
- the great places to dine and shop
- the wonderful people that make this city great
- The beautiful and diverse housing
So I must admit that I was a little disappointed when I read recently in the Broadview Journal that we were only "average" in our recycling efforts.
Average??? No way, I know we can do better.
The average percentage recycled by the 58 communities in Cuyahoga county is ~26.53 and by Broadview Heights ~26.43
Today it is so incredibly easy to recycle! I remember when we used to have to separate the metals,from the glass, from the plastics, but even that was not that bad. Today those 3 can all be placed in the same bag, with just a few caveats:
- Plastics: Remove, and discard lids, rinse, flatten, and remove the labels when
- possible
- Metals: Rinse, remove labels when possible
- Glass: glass jars only, rinse, remove labels when possible and it's o.k. to mix colors
- Place recyclables away from regular trash so they can be easily identified
- Bags must be firmly tied
- Plastics, metals, and glass can all go together into blue grocery bags
Other refuse:
- Cardboard boxes should be collapsed and tied into bundles no more than 3 feet and weighing no more than 50 lbs.
- Put waste oil into spill proof clearly marked container near recyclables
- Place vehicle batteries at curbside with other recyclables
****Important**** Tires may not be disposed of in landfills. They must be disposed of at tire dealers, dealerships, or participating service station.
So let's go Broadview Heights...Let's make it a goal to reach 50% sooner than later!
