Barb Szabo's Blog: Screaming and Yelling Rarely Helps the Situation!

Screaming and Yelling Rarely Helps the Situation!

I have a sale that was supposed to transfer yesterday. It didn't.

The details are ugly and unimportant. Things started looking bad last Friday, so I was upset about it all weekend...waking up in the middle of the night, worrying...you all probably know the feeling.

man screamingOn Monday morning I had to call the other agent. To say I was dreading it is an understatement. I called him, explained what happened and then I waited for the screaming and yelling to begin, only it didn't. He said, and I quote, "sh__ happens"! This should not be construed as him not caring. He definitely cares about this transaction and his sellers.

And then he proceeded to discuss with me the situation and what could be done about it. He told me he had been down this road before and he would try to help me work it out.

He was not looking forward to making the call to the sellers, understandably, but he did.

It is still not resolved and it may not resolve, but I will always remember the way this agent handled this for the time when I am on the receiving end of such a phone call.

Screaming and yelling doesn't solve a thing.

Barb, sounds like you have a great listing agent here.  Like you, I so prefer his type to the ones who jump up and down and holler at me!

Bravo... Nice to hear how professional your listing agent was, often we hear only the bad stuff...

What a great response from that agent!  I dread making those kind of calls.  You worry and worry and worry because you know you're gonna get creamed.  I love the practicality of the attitude!

Screaming rarely works...and you wonder why people keep doing it...they have to be getting something from the behavior to continue it...the sound of your own scream can't be that welcoming even to your own ears...sleeping on it...taking a step back...if screaming is stress relief...that's one of the reasons God made pillows...Stifle !

Barb, in our business the unexpected happens, some we control and some we don't but it is always refreshing to work with an agent on the other side that is professional and willing to work with you to save the deal for all parties involve. Thanks for sharing!

Debbie, I just can't adequately express how far this agent's attitude went in helping me deal with this situation.

It is called experience.  It really makes a difference.  No one wants to make dreaded phone calls, but they cannot be avoided.  Solutions can always be found.  It has also been said that anger is fear manifested by those that are emotionally immature and are frustrated in that they do not have the answers.

Great quote Jim and one to remember. I am trying to keep it all in perspective and this agent's attitude has certainly helped me.

Barb, i'm glad that you were working with a professional. I do not agree about experience, as I get lot of Sh---- from the experienced agents , I think personality, brought up and the values they carry are the factors in behaviour and of course professionalism at all times.

Suma, You bring up an excellent point in that it's all about how you handle it.

It really is a a great day when professionals act like professionals. In our current real estate market where financing, appraisals, inspections are more likely to create speed bumps in a deal.... we all need to take a deep breath. We all need to be the professionals that we know we should be. Great post.

I have always felt it is best to keep our emotions out of any transactions.  There are plenty from the buyer and the seller.

Boy what relief you must have felt when the agent handled your call that way.

Sometimes it works out better than expected.

Good luck Barb !

Makes perfect sense. Sometimes we realtors are our own wort enemies. We disrespect each other and think nothing of it. If someone tries that with me i kindly hang up the phone. I choose not to get miserable with them.

I choose not to get miserable with them.

Robert, I like your choice of words because we do have a choice when someone behaves that way with us.
