I came across these quotes by Abraham Lincoln and was struck by their honesty (today we might use the word transparency), and the clarity in his vision. One might say that a lot has changed in the last 150 years but seeing these quotes , you could argue that, in what matters most, little or even nothing has changed.
Enjoy! These are but a few.
Don't interfere with anything in the Constitution. That must be maintained, for it is the only safeguard of our liberties. And not to Democrats alone do I make this appeal, but to all who love these great and true principles.
--August 27, 1856 Speech at Kalamazoo, Michigan
May our children and our children's children to a thousand generations, continue to enjoy the benefits conferred upon us by a united country, and have cause yet to rejoice under those glorious institutions bequeathed us by Washington and his compeers.
--October 4, 1862 Speech at Frederick, Maryland
It is not merely for to-day, but for all time to come that we should perpetuate for our children's children this great and free government, which we have enjoyed all our lives. --August 22, 1864 Speech to the One Hundred Sixty-sixth Ohio Regiment
Nowhere in the world is presented a government of so much liberty and equality. To the humblest and poorest amongst us are held out the highest privileges and positions. The present moment finds me at the White House, yet there is as good a chance for your children as there was for my father's.
--August 31, 1864 Speech to 148th Ohio Regiment
I know not how to aid you, save in the assurance of one of mature age, and much severe experience, that you can not fail, if you resolutely determine, that you will not.
--July 22, 1860 Letter to George Latham
A capacity, and taste, for reading, gives access to whatever has already been discovered by others. It is the key, or one of the keys, to the already solved problems. And not only so. It gives a relish, and facility, for successfully pursuing the [yet] unsolved ones.
--September 30, 1859 Address before the Wisconsin State Agricultural Society
I leave you, hoping that the lamp of liberty will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.
--July 10, 1858 Speech at Chicago, Illinois
I believe it is an established maxim in morals that he who makes an assertion without knowing whether it is true or false, is guilty of falsehood; and the accidental truth of the assertion, does not justify or excuse him.
--August 11, 1846 Letter to Allen N. Ford
Nevertheless, amid the greatest difficulties of my Administration, when I could not see any other resort, I would place my whole reliance on God, knowing that all would go well, and that He would decide for the right.
In times like the present, men should utter nothing for which they would not willingly be responsible through time and eternity.
--December 1, 1862 Message to Congress
I don't believe in a law to prevent a man from getting rich; it would do more harm than good. So while we do not propose any war upon capital, we do wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else.

Hi Barb! I was just checking in on you to see how you are doing. Looks like you are doing GREAT! Abe sure had some relevant quotes even for today's times, didn't he?
What a great and smart man he was. No wonder our President uses Lincoln's wisdom and words to guide him.
Happy Friday!!
Lori
Lincoln is timeless! Great post!
Great quotes and words of wisdom from a great man. Thanks for sharing
Vickie, I am doing great and hope you are the same. I've listed some very nice homes in the past two weeks and the calls and leads are starting to roll in slowly but surely. Now I just need to close them.
Happy Friday to you too Lori. Thanks for stopping by and enjoy your weekend.
Roxanna, Yes he is and a very wise man.
My pleasure Diane. Have a great weekend.
Old Abe was one smart cookie!!! Wish he was around now to get things snapped back into shape!
Cecily, Wasn't he though? And he makes it all sound so simple. Have a great weekend. I'm in the mood to sell a house :-)
Hey Barb,
I love the quotes. My favorite Abraham Lincoln quote is "Give me six hours to cut down a tree and I shall spend the first four sharpening my axe". Very nice change of pace on the post which is always refreshing!
Barb, I"m reading Team of Rivals, an amazing account of Lincoln and his presidency. And talk about being "unqualified"! When he took office, he'd been a one-term Congressman (years before) and a member of the Illinois State legislature. The guys he was up against were credentialed up the wazoo! It's a long, but really good read.
Hi Pat, Thanks for letting me know. It's one I will add to my ever growing list of books I want to read.
